Are You Tired of Putting Your Ideas on Hold?

Do you shelve your inspired ideas and potentially game-changing initiatives?

You know, the ones you believe could alter the trajectory of your business or career and impact meaningful change in your organization, community or even the world?

It’s so easy to get trapped in the everyday whirlwind, caught in keeping up with the never-ending cycle of projects, putting out the fires and just getting through the day. In a conversation with a client recently, she shared she was tired of putting aside her ideas. An initiative she believes could potentially transform the lives of many families. Her idea keeps her up at night, and when she thinks about it, she feels energized and ambitious. But, she's too busy.

It’s not realistic. It might not work out.

It’s just not the right time.

We can get trapped in this type of thinking. It keeps us in a holding pattern, hoping “one day” it will be different. The idea that there is some magical moment when we will finally have the time, team, resources, and credentials lull us into complacency.

I know this well. I’ve waited and put off my ideas many, many times. There is always a reason to put it off. It took me a year to launch my podcast. A year to shift from wanting to launch it to recording my first episode.

I had to learn to shift from thinking about my ideas to making a promise and taking consistent action. I had to learn how to interrupt the lull.

What I've learned change happens in two ways. Either something external shakes up our daily patterns (like a pandemic), or we make a conscious choice to change and interrupt our day-to-day patterns. We decide we want something different, and we commit to making it happen.

To break the cycle of putting yourself on hold, here are three simple steps to practice:

1. Block 15 minutes a day to reflect on your idea for change and why you care about it. Notice your energy, mood and how you feel as you think about it.

2. Next, choose one small action you can take to move it forward. Go easy and avoid making it too big a step. You want to bypass resistance or feelings of overwhelm. Setting up a conversation, blocking 30 minutes a day in your calendar to work on it, writing down a milestone are examples of small steps.

3. Keep a visual reminder in front of you to remind you of your vision, care and why this project matters to you. Maybe it's a photo of who you want to serve or the contribution you long to make.

And if you're ready to finally commit to bringing your idea of the shelf into committed action, consider joining The Impact Incubator.
